York Region Food Network’s Youth Food Council Coordinator will work with people between the ages of 15 and 25 to develop youth-led food activities that build civic engagement and food skills. The Coordinator will empower youth to be active in creating a healthy food system throughout York Region.
Aurora Mayor, Geoff Dawe, representatives of Miller Group, and Joan Stonehocker of York Region Food Network (YRFN) will be at the Aurora Community Garden to launch the 2018 community garden season.
For the past 25 years YRFN has been managing community gardens in York Region. The first garden started in Markham in 1993 and over the years our program has expanded to 4 other municipalities. Our Urban Agriculture activities touched the lives of over 1300 residents in 2017 by: offering land to those without space to grow, teaching children the importance of healthy soil and healthy food, supporting school gardens, and providing free food growing workshops.
Miller Group has generously donated compost to enrich the soil at our community gardens for more than a decade. We are grateful for the continued support from Miller Compost as we expand our growing spaces and build healthy communities through our garden programs.
We are delighted to acknowledge Miller Group’s 2018 donation during International Compost Awareness Week (ICAW). ICAW raises awareness of the benefits of using compost to improve soil quality, grow healthy plants, and improve water quality.
