Volunteer

Volunteering…. For a little of your time you receive a great reward

York Region Food Network (YRFN) offers our volunteers the chance to make a difference in the fight against hunger in York Region. Your contribution changes our community.

And why else would you like to volunteer with York Region Food Network?….

When volunteering with YRFN you are not tied to a long term weekly commitment. Most of our volunteer opportunities are event focused or seasonal in nature. That means that you can choose to volunteer with us in a way that suits your schedule best. And as a YRFN volunteer you will learn new skills, meet new people and have fun too!

York Region Food Network is NOT a food bank. If you are hoping to sort or distribute food for your local community food bank, please contact your local Food Bank directly.

Volunteer Opportunities include:

Annual Food Bank Survey: The Annual Food Bank Survey is scheduled to take place between February and April. Prior to conducting the surveys, volunteers receive a one hour training session. A minimum commitment of 2 hours of conducting surveys is required.

If you are interested, please contact us and you will be placed on the Volunteer Contact List. Volunteers must be a minimum age of 18 to participate.

Community Gardens: York Region Food Network is looking for volunteers to assist with general garden maintenance duties throughout the growing season at our community gardens located in Markham, Newmarket and Aurora. If you are interested, please indicate which of the three gardens you would like to help out with and YRFN will place you on the contact list. Interested volunteers will be contacted in May to discuss the volunteer schedules for each of the garden projects during the growing season. Most volunteer opportunities will take place during weekday evenings or on the weekend.

Good Food Box Program: York Region Food Network launched a Good Food Box Program in 2011. Fruit and vegetable boxes are distributed to customers once a month from our office location in Aurora. We are looking for volunteers to join a 6 member team every 3rd Thursday of the month during daytime hours to assist with preparing the Good Food Boxes for on-site distribution.

Board of Directors: Currently we are recruiting individuals who are interested in serving as a board member on York Region Food Network Board of Directors.

Interested individuals who meet the following criteria, are invited to submit their names for consideration:

  • Live or work in York Region
  • Willing to dedicate a minimum of 5 hours per month
