Food Fight: Advocating for Health and Social Justice

Over 75 people came to Food Fight: Advocating for Health and Social Justice at the Newmarket Community Centre and Lion’s Hall yesterday! Our panelists provoked a lively community discussion about food insecurity in York Region and the role of food banks, social service agencies, academics, and government representatives in addressing this problem.

Our keynote speaker Dr. Lisa Simon gave an informative and passionate presentation about how a basic income guarantee can drastically reduce poverty in Ontario and help people meet their basic needs. We all came away with some great ideas about how to advocate for change to policies and practices that produce income inequality and food insecurity in our communities!

Special thanks to Our Independence Project for providing excellent tea and coffee service to our guests, and to our newcomer caterers for providing the delicious food for this event!
